Last week was Back Care Awareness Week. Whenever I mentioned this, in my 60 seconds, at networking events, it was funny to watch how almost everyone altered their posture, straightened their backs, altering their seating position, rolling back their shoulders as well as other similar actions.
It was obvious that everyone knows what little actions they can take to look after their backs but do not, unless it’s drawn to their attention.
It is stated that only about 50% of back problems are caused by injury. That means about 50% of back problems are caused by the stresses and strains we put on our own bodies, and especially, our backs.
Here are some simple tips that you can incorporate into your daily lives, to help you reduce those back aches and pain:
Don’t just jump out of bed in the mornings. After stretching in bed, sit on the edge of the bed and stretch up, reaching for the ceiling. Slowly stand, still stretching and reaching for the ceiling. Watch your pets. See how they stretch after awaking. Do the same thing.
Be posture aware. Notice when you are slouching on the sofa putting undue strain on your lower back. Notice when you are hunching over the laptop. Notice when you are leaning in to see the words on the desktop. When you notice, alter your position and sit up straight.
Stand up. Do not sit for long periods of time. Sit for a maximum of one hour, then get up, stretch and move around. Preferably take a 5 minute walk.
Keep hydrated. Do not leech your bones and muscles of water. Keep them hydrated.
Small simple exercises, daily. There are many easy exercise that everyone can do, to keep their backs mobile (perhaps I should produce a video or slideshare of me doing some of the exercises I do?)
As a lot of stress and tension is held in the back, release that stress and tension. Find someone to talk to and/or get a massage. That’s what I’m here for!
I tailor all treatments and therapies to suit the client at the time of their visit. I like to be the person I never had 15 years ago.
These are just simple things I do every day to keep my back pains away.
If you want to talk about your back problems, then please just call for a no-obligation chat. We can always meet up for a chat, too, to ensure we build a rapport and can work together to sort your back problems.
I can work with people on an individual basis at my treatment rooms, or can work on a number of backs in the workplace, school or college. tracey@plumessencetherapies.co.uk 01889 808388 or 07803399594
